 Trees are awesome! At the very least they give us good shade, sometimes good fruit, as well as some good oxygen. Not to mention they can be the home for so many cool animals. Fun fact: 80% of all terrestrial plants and animals live in forests.
Trees are cool, literally! They can decrease the ambient temperatures in cities by as much as 8° Celsius. Trees can save us some energy and some bills. Most of all though, trees can save our planet. No better, more natural, and cheaper way to keep carbon out of the atmosphere and to help us tackle the climate crisis. Just one tree can absorb as much as 22 kg of CO2 every year. A thousand trees would absorb 22 tonnes of carbon! To put this into perspective, the average European has a carbon footprint of 8 tonnes. So within a human lifespan, a small forest of a thousand trees, would absorb the emissions of almost 3 people! Of course, trees need some time to grow and in the first 10 years they don’t absorb as much CO2 so our statements above need some additional calculations. We did the maths for you. Even when we assume that trees take 10 years to start absorbing carbon, we can conclude that it would take a thousand of them less than 40 years to completely offset the accumulated emissions of the average European who lives for 81 years. The sequestered carbon for the other 41 years can offset 3855 London-Rome flights. That much air time would keep you in a plane seat for more than a full year.
