Frequently Asked Questions
How are we achieving our goal of ofsetting death's carbon footprint?
The Impact You Can’t See
Death leaves behind an immense carbon footprint and we want to do something about it.
Cremation, which is the more environmentally-friendly alternative, on average uses up enough diesel to fill up two car gas tanks. On a global scale this has a significant negative impact on the environment.
In the UK cremations emit 115,000 tonnes of CO2 every year. To offset that we need to be planting 4 million trees every year, or 11,000 every day and we will!
Our Plan
At edenn we are on a mission to bring sustainability into the afterlife and we will do so by funding the planting of 1000 trees for every life honoured with the edenn urn. Thus, providing 11 urns a day will offset the industry’s cremation emissions within the year.
Our first mission is in partnership with Kenyan NGO’s and World Economic Forums’s 1 Trillion Trees project. We fund and distribute the seeds to be then planted with the help of local communities.
You will receive a certificate, exact location and photos (if possible) once the thousand trees have been planted.

What is the edenn® urn?
One of it’s kind, the edenn urn can safely be kept at home forever or it can also be planted in nature to nourish its environment and transform one’s remains into living trees!
100% Natural & Biodegradable
A source of innovation, the edenn urn is grown, rather than produced. It is made from a living material, mycelium, that can be described as the ‘stem’ cells of mushrooms. The urn’s eco-design and technology make it not only compostable, but also everlasting. The mycelium body is strong, durable, and has no expiration date.
Tree-bearing
Purpose-made, the edenn urn is meant to envision one’s green legacy by transforming loved ones into beautiful trees. The urn contains a chamber in the lid that can store soil and nutrients. When planted, the urn decomposes and the mycelium works as additional soil nourishment to aid the healthy growth of a tree or plant of any choice. The process and design make up the urn's Halo Technology that nourishes the tree from a sapling to the green and living legacy of our loved ones.

What is mycelium?
Mycelium is the root structure of mushrooms, it is nature’s filter and a source of nutrients for plants of all kinds. Most importantly, it is an innovative way to create biodegradable products that spare our forests and eliminate waste and pollution. Learn more!
The mycelium in edenn urn is made through a proprietary bio-process with circularity in its core. The resulting product is not only sustainable, but also high-performing, everlasting, strong, and durable enough to replace traditional alternatives.

Where to plant (outdoors & at home)?
The edenn urn is legal to use! Planting regulations may vary quite a bit from country to country, however you can always purchase the urn to keep at home or plant in your private property!
Planting Outdoors
Choosing a Tree to Plant
We understand how personal and special the choice of plant or tree may be so we’ve left it entirely up to you! The urn is compatible with all sorts of plants, trees and seeds.
If you are planting outdoors, we suggest you pick a native tree that will flourish in the local conditions and environment.
For the UK, we trust the Woodland Trust to guide you in your choice!
You can check our guide on planting trees in Europe here!
Planting Indoors
The edenn urn can be planted in a pot at home as well. The choice of plant is again up to you, just make sure you get a large enough pot (at least 27x27x22cm) and use plenty of good soil.
Planting Outdoors
- Most regular cemeteries will accept a biodegradable urn to plant in their grounds.
- Natural burial grounds and green cemeteries are on the rise and they will be more than happy to host the edenn urn.
- Forests and parks are also an option, depending on local regulations. Options are as limitless as your imagination!

How to plant a tree with edenn urn®?
Check here to see our complete guide on planting a tree!
The urn itself is intuitive and easy to use. Like a traditional urn it has a lid and a chamber to contain the cremated remain.
The lid is made up of 2 separate elements and has our proprietary Halo Technology, allowing it to plant trees. Removing the top part reveals the chamber that can contain soil and nutrients or a seed (we recommend the use of a tree sapling instead). It is also the opening to connect the urn to larger trees.
Use a living tree (1-2 years old at least) instead of a seed to ensure the green legacy of a loved one. Seeds require extra care as they take long time to germinate and a successful tree sprouting cannot be guaranteed.

NGO Partners
Our first partner is Seedballs Kenya, an NGO that is backed by the World Economic Forum. You can read an article about them here. They involve and empower the local communities who take care of the tree seedlings once planted. The NGO distributes seedballs which carry only strong and native species, such as acacias, that grow stronger with better root systems when planted directly in the ground.
Successful Germination
It is inevitable that some seedballs will fail to germinate and therefore the seedling mortality is never 0%. According to the BBC, half the seedballs will end up growing into mature trees. However, our friends at Eden Reforestation Projects, having planted more than 485 million trees, discovered that this number is not really relevant because in the long term the actual number of trees that sprout exceeds the number of seedballs planted by 150% due to natural regeneration. Therefore, it is safe to say that every edenn urn plants ‘at least’ a thousand trees.
